7 Strategic, Effective, and Uncommon Habits of Highly Productive Pastors Using ChatGPT

October 7, 2024

As a pastor, your role is multifaceted – balancing spiritual leadership, administrative duties, leadership development, volunteer management, community engagement, and more. With so many responsibilities, finding ways to maximize productivity is essential.

ChatGPT is being touted as an invaluable tool these days. But like most technology, the key to getting the most out of it lies in how you use it. Using ChatGPT effectively can authentically boost your productivity. Beyond the basic tasks, there are strategic and less obvious ways to leverage ChatGPT.

In this article, we’ll explore seven uncommon, yet highly effective habits productive pastors use with ChatGPT that we teach in our AI for Church Leaders online community. These habits help you break down complex tasks, gain new insights, and streamline your ministry efforts.

Why These Habits Matter

These habits do not focus on a good prompt or two, but instead change how you interact with ChatGPT to generate usable results. I hope to introduce you to a handful of strategic uses that will produce better results that are more thoughtful, effective, and aligned with your goals. By integrating these practices into your routine, you can be better equipped for your decision-making, deepen your engagement with your congregation, and improve the overall impact of your ministry.

1. Using ChatGPT to Generate Alternative Perspectives and Ideas

How It Works: Productive pastors often encounter complex issues that require creative solutions and multiple viewpoints. But sometimes you don’t have a conversation partner to act like a sounding board or brainstorming partner to get to a broader range of possible inputs or feedback. One uncommon habit is using ChatGPT to generate alternative perspectives and ideas, helping you consider approaches you might not have thought of independently.

Why It Matters: This habit allows you to break out of your usual thought patterns, leading to more innovative and well-rounded decisions that better serve your congregation.

Example Prompt: Imagine you’re my seminary intern and I want you to help brainstorm a list of strategies for community outreach in our multicultural urban setting in <town, state>. Can you suggest five different approaches we could take to better engage with the local immigrant community, which is characterized by <list of descriptions and relevant factors>? Some examples of ideas or existing programs we have are <list current approaches>.  For each new strategy presented, include <list types of input you find helpful>. Please focus on culturally sensitive, inclusive, and feasible strategies for implementation within the next six to 12 months, staffed mainly by church volunteers.

Common Pitfalls: Be open to the ideas generated, but critically evaluate them. Not every suggestion will be applicable, so use your judgment to select the best approach.

2. Using ChatGPT to Simulate High-Stakes Decision-Making

How It Works: Pastors often face decisions that significantly affect their church and community. Another uncommon habit is using ChatGPT to simulate high-stakes decision-making scenarios, helping you think through potential outcomes and weigh the pros and cons.

Why It Matters: This habit enables you to make more informed and thoughtful decisions, reducing the risk of unintended consequences and ensuring that you consider all relevant factors.

Example Prompt: I’m considering a significant decision regarding our church’s expansion next year. Our current situation is <describe the state of your church today>.  Some motivating factors to consider expansion are <list what’s prompting this decision point>. Can you simulate the potential risks and benefits of expanding our facilities by <describe the specifics of options you’re considering>? I need to consider impact factors – examples include financial sustainability, community impact, and alignment with our long-term growth goals. Be sure to ask qualifying questions to help you provide concrete simulated outcomes, such as upsides, downsides, and dependencies.

Common Pitfalls: While ChatGPT can simulate various outcomes, it’s crucial to consult with your church leadership team and consider real-world data before making final decisions.

3. Breaking Down Tasks into Smaller Parts

How It Works: Most beginners ask ChatGPT to create a complete body of work, such as an article or a sermon. However, output quality improves when you break down the task into smaller parts. This habit involves working with ChatGPT to create an outline first, then focusing on one section or task at a time.

Why It Matters: By breaking down tasks, you can refine each part more effectively, leading to a more robust and dynamic final product.

Example Prompt: Let’s start by creating a detailed outline for an article on how to engage young adults in church activities. The full article will be 750-1000 words when completed. The audience for the article is volunteers and key leaders who are involved with <describe current ministry team, departments, etc of the intended audience>. The article should focus on <specific mode, activity, or any topic to help ChatGPT limit the breadth of the article>. The outline should go three levels deep for each section. I will give feedback to revise and iterate portions of the outline. Once the outline is ready, we’ll work on each section individually, beginning with the introduction. Start by asking me three questions to help you create a better draft outline immediately.

Common Pitfalls: Don’t rush the process. Take time to refine the outline before moving on to the sections, ensuring each part aligns with your goals.

4. Using ChatGPT for Pastoral Counseling Preparation

How It Works: Effective counseling requires careful preparation. An uncommon habit of highly productive pastors is using ChatGPT to simulate counseling conversations, helping them prepare for a range of scenarios they might encounter in pastoral care.

Why It Matters: This habit equips you to provide more thoughtful, empathetic, and relevant guidance during counseling sessions, enhancing the support you offer to your congregation.

Example Prompt: I’m preparing for a counseling session with someone struggling to forgive a family member who has deeply hurt them. They recognize forgiveness is aspirational from Christian teaching but need help navigating this in their own experience. Can you simulate potential conversations and suggest approaches to guide them through the process of forgiveness and reconciliation? I’m particularly weak in expressing empathy and compassionate communication. The advice should combine practical steps with spiritual guidance, aligning with Christian values of compassion and healing.

Common Pitfalls: Use ChatGPT as a preparatory tool, not a replacement for the personal empathy and wisdom required in counseling.

5. Exploring Cultural and Community Insights with ChatGPT

How It Works: It is crucial to understand the cultural and community dynamics that influence your congregation. Productive pastors use ChatGPT to explore these dynamics, helping them connect more deeply with their community and tailor their ministry accordingly.

Why It Matters: This habit helps you stay attuned to your congregation’s issues and challenges, enabling you to provide relevant and compassionate leadership.

Example Prompt: Our congregation includes many young adults from suburban areas. What cultural trends and challenges currently influence this demographic, and how can our church address these in our ministry efforts? Please ensure the insights are actionable and relevant to our specific community.

Common Pitfalls: Use these insights as a starting point and engage directly with your congregation to validate and expand your understanding.

6. Give ChatGPT a Head Start

How It Works: The more context and background information you provide to ChatGPT, the better the results you’ll get. This habit involves uploading background materials or copying and pasting relevant information into the chat to help ChatGPT understand the context and what you’re looking for.

Why It Matters: Providing context helps ChatGPT deliver more accurate and tailored responses, saving you time, and improving the quality of the output.

Example Prompt: Before asking ChatGPT to help draft a strategic plan for a new church initiative, you might upload or paste previous strategic plans, mission statements, or relevant documents. You could then ask, “Review the attached document(s). They are <describe what ChatGPT will find useful inside the documents>. Using the attached materials, can you help draft a strategic plan for our new outreach program? Include in the plan the following sections: <list or outline details that should be produced>.”

Common Pitfalls: Don’t overwhelm ChatGPT with too much information at once. Provide just enough context to inform the task at hand, and be specific about what you want to achieve.

7. Ask ChatGPT For A Reverse Interview

How It Works: Instead of simply asking ChatGPT to complete a task, a productive habit is to check in and ask if it has all the necessary information to produce the best results. This reverse interview approach ensures that ChatGPT is evident on the assignment and can clarify anything before proceeding.

Why It Matters: This habit helps avoid miscommunication and ensures the output is aligned with your expectations.

Example Prompt: Before diving into a task, ask ChatGPT, “Do you have all the information you need to complete this task effectively? If not, what additional details would help you improve the results?”

Common Pitfalls: Don’t skip this step, especially for complex or important tasks. It’s an easy way to ensure that ChatGPT fully understands what you’re asking for.
