I attended AI4 2025 in Las Vegas – North America’s largest AI conference, bringing together over 8,000 industry experts across 85+ countries and spanning every conceivable vertical from healthcare to finance to education. 

The event showcased the latest in AI applications, research breakthroughs, and strategic implementations across industries. But it was the headline keynote that proved most surprising.

Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel Prize-winning “Godfather of AI,” has built a reputation for pessimistic warnings about artificial intelligence. His departure from Google in 2023 to speak freely about AI risks cemented his image as the field’s chief alarmist. Going into his fireside chat with Bloomberg’s Shirin Ghaffari, I expected the usual dire predictions about existential threats and calls for regulatory intervention.

What I didn’t expect was a conversation that ventured into surprisingly theological territory – one that offered unexpected insights into values-based technology development and what it means to build systems that genuinely serve human flourishing.

The Mother-Child Paradigm Shift

While Hinton did acknowledge his timeline for artificial general intelligence has compressed dramatically (from 30-50 years to 5-20 years), his most compelling insights weren’t about doom scenarios. “The only model we have of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing is a mother being controlled by her baby,” Hinton said. “The mother has all sorts of built-in instincts, hormones as well as social pressures to really care about the baby… We need to build maternal instincts into these things so they really care about people.”

When asked how to implement “mother AI” technically, his honest response was telling: “I think we need a lot of research on how to do that. But this isn’t research on how to make them smarter, it’s research on how to make them more maternal.”

Instead of asking only “How can this make us more efficient?” or “How can this reduce costs?”, his mother AI concept suggests additional questions:

  • How does this system demonstrate genuine care for end users?
  • What values are embedded in its decision-making processes?
  • How do we ensure it prioritizes human flourishing over mere optimization?
  • What safeguards prevent it from treating people as means rather than ends?

Surprisingly, Hinton expressed optimism about international cooperation on AI safety, noting that “all the countries want AI not to take over from people.” He suggested that unlike cybersecurity or economic competition, the existential nature of advanced AI could create unprecedented incentives for global collaboration (like how cold war collaboration against nuclear doom worked).

This presents opportunities for values-based organizations and leaders to participate in shaping international frameworks, and is something that becomes more possible when the conversation includes explicit discussion of care, human dignity, and moral foundations.

Despite his long-term concerns, Hinton highlighted immediate opportunities where AI can serve human flourishing, particularly in healthcare. He noted how AI has already discovered information in medical scans that human experts missed and predicted significant advances in drug discovery and cancer treatment.

His observation that “healthcare is elastic. Meaning, we can absorb endless amounts of healthcare” suggests sectors focused on human welfare may be ideal proving grounds for values-aligned AI development.

The Research Foundation Crisis

One of Hinton’s most pointed criticisms wasn’t aimed at AI development but at the erosion of basic research funding. He called cuts to NIH and NSF “a huge mistake,” noting that “the return on investment from funding basic research is huge. That’s where all the long-term progress comes from.”

This vision aligns remarkably well with theological concepts of protective love, sacrificial service, and the kind of power that empowers others rather than dominating them. It suggests possibilities for AI development that goes beyond mere efficiency to embody wisdom, care, and genuine concern for human flourishing.

The Path Forward

Here’s one truth: Artificial intelligence is rapidly being integrated into every sector of society. The question isn’t whether this integration will continue, but what values and motivations will guide it.

Hinton’s insights suggest that the most important decisions ahead aren’t just technical but fundamentally about what kind of intelligent beings we choose to create and what kind of relationships we want to have with them. These are questions where voices committed to human dignity, moral wisdom, and authentic care have essential contributions to make.
