Flourish Community Hub: Nurturing Growth & Connection

August 18, 2025

Born from a vision to revitalize Gary, Indiana, Flourish Community Hub stands as a beacon of hope and collaboration. Launched by Flourish Senior Pastor Dexter Harris in the fall of 2023, the Flourish Community Hub (commonly known as the Hub) is an initiative dedicated to transforming Gary from a city defined by economic hardship and decline. The Hub seeks to ensure that the city of Gary is defined by resilience, vibrancy, and opportunity created through a model of collaboration with other community organizations to provide holistic social services such as youth mentorship, mental health services, job creation, and basic needs assistance in one accessible location.

To turn this vision into reality, the Hub has outlined four clear “pathways to flourish”:

  1. Youth Mentorship & Education
Teenagers aged 13–21 engage in regular mentorship sessions, receive emotional support, and participate in educational programming.
  2. Mental Health & Wellness Services
Trauma-informed professionals offer counseling and referrals, addressing the deep-seated mental and emotional impacts of poverty and structural inequality.
  3. Job Creation & Business Development
By establishing co-working space, promoting entrepreneurship, and providing childcare support, the Hub empowers residents to engage in stable income-generating work.
  4. Basic Needs Assistance
A resource closet stocked with food, clothing, hygiene kits, and household essentials for individuals in need.

These targeted objectives are designed not only to respond to current needs in the city but build a sustained foundation for growth and transformation.

Though still in its infancy, Flourish Community Hub is demonstrating tangible outcomes:

  • Partnership Growth
More than 15 partner organizations operate within the Hub, collectively offering services in youth mentorship, addiction recovery, counseling, and essential resource distribution.
  • Infrastructural Advancement
A 20,000-square-foot property has been renovated into the Hub’s headquarters, now home to co-working areas, a childcare center, and a resource closet.
  • Fundraising Momentum
Initial fundraising began in late 2023; by spring and summer 2024, the church successfully rallied support – including grants, donations, and in-kind contributions – to launch the Hub. Approximately $400,000 was raised to revamp the space, hire staff, and launch programming.
  • Launch and Scale-Up
Programs have steadily rolled out serving young people, families, and entrepreneurs across Gary’s often underserved communities.

Building a new community ecosystem hasn’t been without hurdles, but the team has captured vital lessons along the way:

  • Listening as Leadership
Initial community surveys revealed how fragmented and disconnected local services were. The Hub learned early on that lasting impact begins with listening – residents’ voices now play a central role in shaping strategy.
  • Collaboration Trumps Competition
The Hub emphasizes collective impact. By bringing together churches, nonprofits, businesses, and civic entities, it has fostered a spirit of cooperation, improved service coordination, and attracted new funding sources.

Despite early successes, the Hub continues to navigate challenges including:

  • Fragmented Service Ecosystem
Many community organizations still operate in silos. The Hub must continue building trust and finding shared ground without diminishing the distinct missions of its partners.
  • Sustained Funding
While the initial fundraising push was fruitful, the ongoing work requires sustainable funding streams – grants, sponsorships, coworking fees, and paid programming.
  • Capacity Building
As services expand, so does the need for professional staffing – licensed counselors, youth mentors, childcare providers – all of whom require competitive, consistent compensation to maintain program quality.

The idea for the Hub is rooted in Pastor Dexter Harris’s personal ministry journey. Through decades of service in Gary, he observed how disconnected efforts among churches and nonprofits led to inefficiencies and missed opportunities. Inspired by both pastoral care and civic responsibility, Pastor Harris envisioned a centralized space where services could be coordinated, and where people could be seen and served holistically.

This “one-stop” model isn’t just about convenience – it’s about relationship. Along with Associate Director Raydia Martin and the founding team, Harris began knocking on doors, hosting listening sessions, and nurturing partnerships with government agencies, nonprofits, and business leaders.

What they learned is simple but profound: community transformation requires unity, mutual respect, and shared stewardship. This philosophy now defines the Hub’s culture – partnership over duplication, dignity over paternalism, and radical welcome over exclusivity.

Since opening, Flourish Community Hub has been recognized as a replicable model for collaborative impact. Local and regional leaders now cite it as a case study for how resource consolidation, presence, and relational trust can break the cycle of fragmented aid.

As quoted in The Chicago Crusader in May 2024:

“Despite its struggles, Gary is a resilient community… The Flourish Community Hub is a symbol of this collective commitment… where community members, service organizations, and local businesses pool their skills, experience, and resources to be a transformative force in this city.”

The path ahead is both ambitious and essential:

  • Scaling Through Replication
With a successful model in place, there is potential to expand to other neighborhoods – if local partners are ready to align and invest in collective impact.
  • Growing Civic Infrastructure
Future plans include launching workforce training programs, expanding youth services, and scaling up mental health offerings.
  • Financial Self-Sufficiency
Plans are underway to introduce fee-based services such as coworking memberships, sponsorship packages, and childcare support to supplement donor contributions and grants.
  • Deepening Community Participation
Flourish aims to deepen resident engagement by integrating community members into advisory roles and decision-making processes to ensure programs stay grounded and relevant.

Gary has a rich history but has long struggled with the effects of economic decline, high crime, and limited opportunities. Yet, despite these challenges, its residents continue to demonstrate pride, resilience, and a deep desire for transformation. Residents, churches, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs are looking to rebuild a place that mirrors their collective resilience.

Flourish Community Hub doesn’t claim to solve every issue facing Gary. Instead, it represents what’s possible when people stop working in isolation and start building together – purposefully, compassionately, and collectively.

The Hub was born out of necessity but is sustained by hope. It is proof that a shared vision, executed through trust and collaboration, can begin to shift the story of a city. Flourish is creating a model not just for surviving – but for truly thriving – one resident, one organization, and one sacred space at a time.
