I long to change the world.
This has been true since I was a boy. As a result, I have day dreamed in different seasons about various career paths and life goals. I wanted to be a doctor that healed people, made money and gave it away. I wanted to be a martyr for Jesus in a foreign land that inspired people with my grand faith. I wanted to be a compelling preacher that filled large venues with people hanging on my every word. Then I started paying attention to Jesus.
Jesus’ approach to changing the world is baffling initially. He consistently ran crowds off. He passed over influential people to spend time with men who stunk like fish. He gave the bulk of his time and energy to a handful of simple, hungry people rather than cultivating and clinging to a platform, reputation, or public persona. Jesus was convinced that the best means to influence the world with the truth and beauty of his life, death and resurrection was making disciples. He selected a bounded number of people with whom he could meaningfully share his life. Then he taught them, travelled with them, ate with them, laughed and wept with them, and ultimately sent them. That was it. His plan was very different than mine.
So, I gave it a shot. I laid down visions of personal grandeur and started giving my life away to small groups of men. Turns out he was on to something. The fruit from making his model my aim has been stunning. I have a long way to go, but every step I take towards abiding in Jesus and then giving myself away to others has been full of both joy and fruit. What was initially baffling is now beautiful in my sight.
