Empowered: Moving with The Spirit
The single command that Jesus gave his followers before igniting a movement was “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised…” He was telling them to wait for and then move with the Spirit. In 2022, we’ll discover a growing awareness of the Spirit’s work and leadership while also realizing that we will always be more effective if we move with the Holy Spirit.

J.D. Greear
J.D. Greear
J.D. Greear is the pastor of The Summit Church, in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.
The Summit is characterized by its gospel focus and sending culture. As Pastor J.D. often says, “The gospel is not merely the diving board off of which we jump into the pool of Christianity, it’s also the pool itself.” The deeper we dive into the extravagant love of Christ, the more our lives will be filled with unquenchable joy, reckless generosity, and audacious faith.
Depth in the gospel also leads to width in the mission. Under Pastor J.D.’s leadership, the Summit has grown from a plateaued church of 300 to one of over 10,000, making it one of Outreach magazine’s “top 25 fastest-growing churches in America” for many years running.
Seating capacity, however, is not the church’s primary metric for success. Sending capacity is. Pastor J.D. has led the Summit in a bold vision to plant one thousand new churches by the year 2050. In the last 18 years, the church has sent out more than 1,000 people to live on church planting teams—in North Carolina, across the United States, and around the world.
Pastor J.D. Greear has authored several books, including Just Ask: The Joy of Confident, Bold, Patient, Relentless, Shameless, Dependent, Grateful, Powerful, Expectant Prayer (2021), What Are You Going to Do With Your Life? (2020), Above All: The Gospel Is the Source of the Church’s Renewal (2019), Not God Enough: Why Your Small God Leads to Big Problems (2018), Gaining by Losing: Why the Future Belongs to Churches That Send (2015), Gospel: Recovering the Power that Made Christianity Revolutionary (2011), Stop Asking Jesus into Your Heart: How to Know for Sure You Are Saved (2013), and Jesus, Continued … Why the Spirit Inside You Is Better Than Jesus Beside You (2014).
Pastor J.D. completed his Ph.D. in Theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, writing on the correlations between early church presentations of the gospel and Islamic theology. Seeing Muslims come to faith in Christ has long been a burden of his, a burden that led him to serve in Southeast Asia with the International Mission Board.
Pastor J.D. served as the 62nd president of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Pastor J.D. and his wife Veronica live in Raleigh. Together they are raising four awesome children: Kharis, Alethia, Ryah, and Adon.

Empowered: Moving with the Spirit – Hosted by Alpha USA
Let’s discover a growing awareness of the Spirit’s work and leadership while also realizing that we will always be more effective if we move with the Holy Spirit. Unpack Exponential’s 2022 church multiplication theme and join the conversation with other reproducing church leaders and multiplication activists.
Part 1 – “THE EMPOWERED HEART”
At some point, almost every pastor or leader looks at their churches and ministries and thinks to themselves, “There must be more to it than this.” There must be more than our best plans, programs, and people can accomplish. The good news is, this is where the empowerment of the Spirit truly begins. And before we discover what He has for those we are pastoring, it is critical to cultivate a longing for “more” for ourselves. This session will look at practical postures that help position leaders to find new starting lines or refreshed hunger for more of the Spirit in our own lives and leadership.
Part 2 – “THE EMPOWERED CULTURE”
Life in the Holy Spirit is not simply for individuals but for communities. In the book of Philippians, Paul speaks of a “common sharing in the Spirit” among believers, and in Ephesians, he encourages the church to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit.” The Holy Spirit has not come simply to unite us to God but also to unite us to one another. In the Empowered Culture session, we will talk about best practices for building a ”common sharing in the Spirit,” and discover ways we can grow in leading teams and communities into greater dependence and expectation towards the work of the Spirit in our gatherings and ministries.
Part 3 – “THE EMPOWERED MOVEMENT”
Just as no one Christian, can fulfill Jesus’ purposes without community, so too no one church, no matter how big or well-resourced, has all the tools necessary to “change the world” or even change our cities or neighborhoods without connection to and partnership with other churches. No single community can fully express all that Jesus is and all that he wants to do in the world. The body of Christ is bigger than any one church. If we want our churches, our cities, and our world to experience more of the Spirit we will need actively and intentionally to build ongoing relationship and partnership with leaders and communities across the spectrum of the collective Church. In this session, we will explore stories of where and how that is happening across our nation, and best practices for how to begin in our own contexts.
Speaker:
Todd Proctor / Alpha USA and Rockharbor Church

Cutting Edge Tools & Training to Advance Your Study, Teaching, and Pastoral Care – Hosted by Logos Bible Software
When the people you serve have questions, do you want them going to Google? Most people are satisfied with sermon length, but a recent study shows that many are unsatisfied with sermon depth. You want to dig deeper into the Bible, showing the way for your people, but how? Learn how to study the cultural and historical context, explore the original Greek and Hebrew and leverage a massive theological library to do in-depth exegesis delivering 40-50 hours of Bible study and sermon prep in seconds. Then see how to seamlessly integrate cutting-edge technology and media resources into your messages, and be able to both archive them for your own future reference, as well as publish them to the web. Practice using a professionally curated computerized counseling guide to search topics including marriage, grief, and addiction to discover what trustworthy biblical counseling resources have to say. Then be guided in what you may say and ask when the need arises and you are at a loss. In this interactive training, learn how you can use Logos to further equip yourself and the Church to grow in the light of the Bible.

Reaching and Raising the Next Generation – Hosted by Leadership Network
It seems that every new generation is making negative headlines. They’re “leaving the church,” “deconstructing their faith,” “constantly job-hopping,” “not graduating college,” and “in crippling debt.”
But it’s not all bad news for Gen Z & Millennials. We are seeing a remnant of resilient young leaders who are pursuing holiness, pushing back darkness, and not bowing to political correctness or cultural norms. Rather, they’re insistent on changing their culture for Christ and reaching the most lost generation our nation has ever seen.
In this equipping lab, you will experience an honest discussion about how leaders can effectively reach and raise a new generation towards a hopeful future in a dark and divided world.
Speakers:
Aaron Barnett / Next Gen Director, Leadership Network
Hannah Gronowski Barnett / Next Gen Director, Leadership Network

They did it again one year later in 2020. And now they are planting two churches at the same time in the same way – all home-grown, all in-house. In this track three of their leaders will explain their strategy, open up their playbook, and help you map your next steps to move from partner-planting to parent-planting.

What Leaders Are Saying
I love what Exponential is doing to focus on multiplication, specifically the mission to see the percentage of U.S. churches that ever reproduce increase to greater than 10%. That’s a mission worth giving our lives to.
